Students Raise Money to End Slavery

Posted: 18-Nov-2011  Category: Outreach

How does Jesus want us to respond to the poor and needy?  This was the burning question asked of our students in a recent chapel led by Jeff Johnson.

During chapel follow-up in Mrs. Waldheim’s 4th period Honors Biology class, the students began discussing various mission projects that they and Mrs. Waldheim had participated in.  Samaritan’s Purse was an organization that Mrs. Waldheim and her husband had worked with for several years doing medical mission trips.  Samaritan’s Purse provides a wide variety of opportunities for Christians to help with the poor and needy both on the mission field and at home.  Each year a catalog is published, providing opportunities to financially help those in need overseas.

The students took a look at the catalog and chose to raise money to provide freedom for those who have been enslaved in human trafficking.  $75.00 would be used by Samaritan’s Purse to help rescue one child from a life of slavery.  What started as a class project quickly turned into a school-wide fundraiser with the guidance of Mr. Miller and Mrs. Waldheim, and lead by Meg VanDyk, Morgan Blake, and Nick Neiman.

Each class was challenged during Morning Start to raise $75.00 per class and the race was on.  Mrs. Warner began motivating her sophomores each day for a week, and their class raised $555.57 during the week-long challenge.  The freshman class raised a total of $241.00.  The final total was $1,007.  Instead of raising the $75.00 per class, the entire school came together to raise enough money for 13 children to be freed from slavery.
