5th Grade Mud and Dry Walk
Posted: 03-Feb-2012 Category: Lower School, OCS-Academics
The fifth grade immensely enjoyed their annual 2-day field trip to the Seminole County Environmental Center. The first day the students hiked to a spring-fed stream where they fished with nets, exploring the aquatic habitat. Then the students followed their guide through the mud of the hydric hammock habitat! This unique habitat is created by hundreds of underground springs that hydrate the low-lying areas here in Central Florida.
The second day, students were exposed to a mixed hardwood hammock and oak-palmetto scrub. They learned how to use a compass and basic orienteering skills. They also enjoyed meeting a rescued owl and other Florida wildlife in the center’s museum.
Overall it was a great time of building knowledge and memories! A special thanks to all our dads and brave moms that volunteered for the Mud and Dry Walk!
