3rd Grade Visits the Orlando Rescue Mission

Posted: 12-Dec-2011  Category: Outreach

OCS third grade students took a trip to the Women and Children’s Center at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, a mission that provides temporary shelter to the homeless in the Orlando area. At the mission, single women, women with children, and parents with children are given not only food and shelter, but a chance to hear the gospel, get help completing their education, and assistance finding a job.

Our students brought new, unwrapped toys to the Mission.  Resident parents will be able to “shop” from these and other toys that have been donated.  For almost all, this will be their only chance to provide toys to their children on Christmas.  Our students were also given a guided tour, led by the volunteer coordinator, Leisa Butler.  Leisa explained all that the Mission did to help the residents and also the ways in which our students and their families could continue to support the Mission.

Our time at the Mission ended with our students playing in the gym with the preschoolers.  These children are being cared for onsite, while their parents are in school or working.  Third graders pushed little ones in toy cars, played mini-sized basketball games, and had a fun time assisting with the kids.
