Three years ago, Orangewood Christian School and Orangewood Presbyterian Church chose to honor the memory of David Hammond, a man who selflessly served others for the glory of Jesus Christ. The David Hammond Service Award is given annually to the person who leads with a servant’s heart and whose work has illustrated a ministry that honors God with a mission centered on building ambassadors for Christ. Pastor Chuck Green, founding minister of Orangewood Presbyterian Church, and Orangewood Christian School and Coach Doug Fleming were the first two recipients humbled by this wonderful award for service. Friday, May 13, 2011, former baseball coach Bob Ronchetti was announced as the third recipient of the David Hammond Service Award. Coach Ronchetti took a vision he and David Hammond had years ago and helped construct a baseball field where the Orangewood community could enjoy a game centered on life lessons. His selfless giving of time and knowledge, combined with his investment in choosing to lead kids to Christ through a game he loved and adored, has led the way to the current success the Orangewood baseball program enjoys today as one of the state’s premier baseball programs. As Bob Ronchetti stood on the very pitcher’s mound he was one of the first to create, in preparation of throwing out the first pitch of Orangewood’s Regional Championship game Friday, Galatians 6: 9-10 would be correct characterizing the moment: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
