Lego Robotics for 4th-6th Grades next year

We are excited to announce we will be starting a competitive team in robotics for the First Lego League (FLL) next year. Only 10 spots will be available for this team of 4th to 6th grade students in 2020-2021.

We will be having an informational meeting about this program on Friday, February 28, at 2:00 PM in the music room.  At that time, we will hand out applications to apply for one of the spots on this team. Applications will be due back to Principal Miller no later than March 11th. A team of teachers, our team sponsored leader and administration will be involved in choosing the ten member team.

All students who are chosen for this team must be committed to the team for the entire year. In FLL, teams are immersed in real-world math and science challenges. They design their own solution to a current scientific question or problem and build LEGO robots that perform different missions.

For further information, see the website http://www.firstlegoleague.org/. Please email Mrs. Miller if you plan to attend this parent meeting dmiller@ocsrams.org so we can prepare handouts.

Canned Food Drive | March

During the month of March, we are collecting canned goods for Hamilton Elementary in Sanford. Although the school is just 16 miles from our campus, this is a mission project opportunity for all of our OCS families. 90 percent of the families in the school live in poverty. At least two or more families have been living in their vehicles and several families are doubling up due to economic loss. The majority of the students who graduate from 5th grade there do not go on to graduate from high school, partly because of hunger.

The GOOD NEWS is that we can help by providing food, so these families are not hungry. With full bellies, students focus better and an education is the best way out of poverty. Students in grades K4 through 2nd grade may bring canned chicken or tuna and those students in 3rd through 6th grades may bring plastic jars of peanut or almond butter. The collection cart will be outside at carline each morning and afternoon.

Reserve the Date Tech Talks | Thursday, March 12th | LINK

OCS is educating our students for life in the future. It is our goal to help our students gain deep content mastery as well as develop a broad range of creative skills to be productive and prosperous Christian leaders. These skills include the 4 C’s: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Our iLearn@OCS technology initiative will provide the tools the “iGeneration” needs to master these skills while ensuring our device strategy is Consistent, Reliable and most importantly SAFE (CRS). To facilitate partnership, OCS Lower School will be hosting Tech Talks on Thursday, March 12th. There will be four sessions on the Lower School Campus led by Matt Eggert, OCS Director of Instructional Technology and Innovation and Principal Dawn Miller. There will be a limit of 25 parents per session which will be held at 8:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM (childcare will be provided), and 6:00 PM (no childcare available at this time).

Calling all Lower School Dads | LINK

All OCS dads and/or grandfathers are welcome to join us the first full week of every month. Not only do our kids love to have us on campus, but the faculty and staff on the Lower School Campus love having us. We are able to serve them by relieving them of their carpool duties, so that they can handle other things on their to-do list....like preparing for the day ahead of teaching our kids!  We gather at 7:10am and are done promptly by 8:00am. Come meet some new dads and enjoy the fun.

Signing up is easy. Just follow these three steps:

1) Access the SignUp from this LINK

2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like. Sign up for as many as you want.

3) You will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on SignUp.com.
